Our very special visitor, Rylan’s Great Grandma!

We are learning about comparing our school life to what school was like in the past. To help us understand this we invited along a very special guest, Mrs Atkinson who is Rylan’s Great Grandma and Rylan’s Mum’s Grandma. She talked to us about what school was like when she was a school girl beginning school 77 years ago.

We learnt about how far she had to walk to get to school. This is unlike us as we all travel to school by car. She showed us a picture of her uniform, a tunic, white blouse and a tie which all the girls had to wear. It was more formal than the school uniform we wear today. Mrs Atkinson said that when she was little she thought the teachers looked like penguins whereas the teachers at our school don’t even wear a uniform. In the classroom they had a chalkboard and also used pencils and ink to write with. When they had done good work they would get a good stamp but if they hadn’t they got a bad stamp. They had no technology – no phones or iPads. At playtime they were given a small bottle of milk and sometimes an apple. The games they played were skipping and hopscotch.

Thank you Mrs Atkinson for coming to talk to us and sharing your memories of your school days with us. We really enjoyed it. Some of us thought we would have enjoyed going to school in the past and some of us are really pleased we go to school now. Rylan we thought your Great Grandma was great.
